A cubic yard is a 3 x 3 x 3 foot cube. Bulk material is sold in those cubes, or by the ton, and the whole trick of ordering is converting your project's footprint into one of the two. These calculators do that conversion for 24 specific products we stock, each at its real weight per cubic yard. A yard of shredded mulch weighs around 600 lb. A yard of crusher run weighs 3,000 lb. Same cube, five times the weight, which is why a generic aggregate calculator gets tonnage wrong and a material-specific one doesn't.
Choose your material
How the math works
Area times depth gives volume. Multiply length by width in feet, then by depth converted to feet (inches divided by 12), and you have cubic feet. Divide by 27 for cubic yards. Multiply yards by the material's density and you have tons. That's the entire calculation, and it's the same one our dispatcher runs when someone reads measurements over the phone.
Tons = cubic yards × density (0.3 for mulch, up to 1.55 for riprap)
Depth is where estimates go wrong. People measure area carefully, then guess depth, and a 10 x 10 patio at 2 inches needs half the stone of the same patio at 4 inches. Each material page lists the depths that actually work for its projects, so start there if you're unsure.

Which material fits the job?
- New driveway or parking pad: crusher run or road base underneath, driveway gravel or #57 stone on top. Two layers, two calculators.
- Standing water, soggy trench, French drain: clean #57 or drain rock, 12 inches or more.
- Planting beds: shredded mulch where things grow, river rock where you want a border that never needs a refresh.
- Bare or thin lawn: 4–6 inches of screened topsoil, then seed or sod.
- Raising grade or filling a hole: fill dirt does the structure, topsoil goes on the top 4–6 inches only.
- Paver patio: compacted base plus a strict 1 inch of bedding sand. The Paver Base and Paver Sand calculators split the two layers for you.
- Playground fall zones: pea gravel at 9–12 inches of maintained depth.
- A bank or shoreline that keeps washing out: riprap in 12-inch-plus layers over fabric.
