The load this material usually gets ordered to correct is a lane or a pad topped with clean washed rock that never firmed up. Fist-sized stone goes down, looks right for a week, then tires push it into windrows and the surface you paid for is sitting along the edges. Clean stone has nothing in it to knit. 3/8" crushed stone is the other end of that decision: angular crushed rock at roughly three eighths of an inch, small enough to settle into the surface of a prepared base and sharp enough that the pieces hold against each other once traffic has worked them in.
What 3/8" crushed stone replaces on a Texas lane, and what it cannot
It is a top course. That distinction does most of the work on this page. Laid two inches deep over a compacted base it fills the open texture at the surface, evens out the ride and gives a walking or driving surface a tidy finish. Laid three inches deep straight onto clay it disappears into the clay, because there is nothing underneath doing the structural job.
The substitution people get right is swapping out a coarse washed stone for this one at the surface. The substitution people get wrong is using it instead of a base. Load is carried by a graded material with fines running all through it, which on this range means Flex Base or a compacted crushed limestone base. This goes on top of one of those, never instead.
Three small stones on a Texas order form, measured against each other
| Material | Size and grading | Best at |
|---|---|---|
| 3/8" Crushed Stone | About 3/8 inch, angular, single size | An even finish course over a prepared base |
| Stone Screenings | 1/4 inch minus, dust all through | Screeding flat and bedding a paving unit |
| Walkway Gravel | 3/8 inch, graded mix of sizes | A path surface that has to stay walkable |
| #8 Crushed Stone | 3/32 to 3/8 inch, washed, no fines | Drainage and permeable paver work |
Read the grading column rather than the size column. Two of those are nominally the same size and behave nothing alike, because one is a single gradation and one is a blend that carries smaller pieces to lock the surface together.
Lane top course, garden path, pipe bed and tree ring
Four jobs suit it, and the first is the volume seller.
- Drive and lane top course. Over a compacted base, a two-inch finish layer gives a smoother surface than coarse rock and holds its shape between gradings.
- Paths and patio finishes. A finer texture underfoot than an inch-sized stone, and it stays tidy at an edge.
- Pipe and utility bedding. Small angular pieces settle around a changing profile and hold a line evenly along the run, which matters where clay above is moving with the season.
- Landscape cover. Tree rings, bed edges and border strips, where the even small size reads as deliberate rather than scattered.
A 600-foot ranch lane and a 14 by 35 RV pad, worked through
Both of these are finish-layer sums, over a base that is already compacted.
Take a lane 600 feet long and 10 feet wide getting a two-inch top course. That is 600 x 10 = 6,000 square feet, then 6,000 x 2 ÷ 12 = 1,000 cubic feet, and 1,000 ÷ 27 = 37.0 cubic yards. This site publishes roughly 2,800 lb per cubic yard for 3/8 inch chips, about 1.40 tons per yard, so 37.0 x 1.40 is approximately 51.8 tons. An RV or boat pad at 14 by 35 feet is 490 square feet; at the same two inches, 490 x 2 ÷ 12 = 81.7 cubic feet, which is 3.0 cubic yards.
Both are worked examples rather than installed jobs. Measure your own ground, and put the figures through the stone calculator, which converts cubic yards to tons and adds five percent by default for spread loss. On a lane that length, plan the drop points before the day rather than moving material afterwards.
An 18 by 22 play area: the one job to give to something rounder
A play surface of 18 by 22 feet is 396 square feet, and at three inches that comes to 396 x 3 ÷ 12 = 99 cubic feet, or 3.7 cubic yards. Angular stone at that depth is the wrong answer for children. Fresh-broken faces have edges on them, and falls find the edges.
Rounded material is what play areas want, so pea gravel is the order on this range, or a purpose-made play surfacing bought elsewhere. It is worth saying plainly, because the size looks right on a screen and the shape is what matters.
Dropping thirty-seven yards along a ranch approach, not in one heap
Work the area first, then the depth, then decide where the pile can go. A two-inch finish course over a long lane is best dropped in sections along the run rather than in one heap, because moving that material twice is a day of work nobody planned for. On a small pad or path, one drop close to the work is enough.
Delivery is arranged at checkout by ZIP code, and the truck needs clear access to reach the spot you have marked, which on a ranch approach usually means checking overhead branches and a soft gateway before the day. Set your quantity and your date on the 3/8" Crushed Stone page, and check your ZIP against the Texas delivery areas page first if you are out past the usual run.
