Mason Sand for Texas Mortar, Paver and Play Sand Jobs

Nobody loses a paver patio on Texas clay because they picked the wrong sand. They lose it because the layer underneath the sand was never built for ground that swells in a wet month and shrinks back in a dry one. Mason Sand is a finishing material, ultra-fine and consistent in grain, washed to take out clay, silt and organic matter. It does its job beautifully in a thin course over something solid, and does nothing at all as a substitute for structure. That distinction is the decision most people are actually here to make.

Three materials on this site get bought for overlapping jobs, and the difference is grain size and what it does when you press on it.

The short version: if it goes into a mix or has to feel soft, that is Mason Sand. If it is carrying anything or needs to hold a screeded profile under traffic, look at the coarser two. Screenings are angular, so the grains bite into each other and resist shifting in a way a rounded washed grain will not.

Where the fine washed grain earns its place on a Texas job

In mortar, consistency is everything. An even grain size gives a mix that spreads smoothly and behaves the same from the first batch to the last, and washing matters because clay left in a sand changes how the mortar sets. On coastal work, where salt air and wind already give brick and block a hard time, a clean and predictable mix is worth more than a fast one.

In paver work, the sand is the leveling course that lets you set each unit flush and the material swept into the joints afterwards to lock the field together. Neither of those is a structural role. The structure is the compacted base below, and on clay ground that base is the part worth over-building.

Away from construction, the same fine, washed, debris-free grain is what makes it usable in sandboxes, volleyball courts and beach-style landscape areas, where people are on it barefoot.

A ten by twelve play area and what fills it

Sandboxes and courts want depth, because shallow sand just exposes whatever is underneath within a week of use.

For a 10 by 12 foot play area at eight inches: 120 square feet, x 8 ÷ 12 = 80 cubic feet, ÷ 27 = 3.0 cubic yards. This site publishes roughly 2,700 lb per cubic yard for mason and washed sand, about 1.35 tons per yard, so 3.0 x 1.35 is approximately 4.1 tons. Edge the area with timber or a paver course so the sand has something to stop against, and give the base a way to drain so the box is not holding water after a storm.

Bedding a paver apron for the RV and the boat

An apron that takes an RV or a boat trailer is a load-bearing surface with a thin sand course in it, not a sand pad. The bedding layer is deliberately shallow. Too much sand under pavers and the units settle unevenly under a heavy axle.

For a 12 by 30 foot apron with a one-inch bedding course: 360 square feet, x 1 ÷ 12 = 30 cubic feet, ÷ 27 = 1.1 cubic yards. Under it goes a compacted Flex Base layer built for the weight, with the pad crowned so water sheds off it rather than sitting between the pavers. Order jointing sand as part of the same delivery, since sweeping the joints full is what stops the field creeping under turning wheels.

The long rural lane that should never see a grain of it

This is the one people ask about and should not do. Take a lane 400 feet long by 10 feet wide: 4,000 square feet. At four inches that is 1,333 cubic feet, ÷ 27 = 49 cubic yards of sand, placed where vehicles will push it into ruts, rain will wash it into the bar ditch, and the first wet spell will turn the surface to slop.

A lane wants material that compacts: Flex Base for the structure, or crushed limestone base where an existing lane just needs a firmer running surface. Sand has no place in either layer. Working that number out is still useful, because it shows the scale of what you would be buying twice.

How thin a bedding course wants to be

Bedding sand is measured in an inch or so, screeded flat, and never compacted before the pavers go on. Its job is to let each unit seat itself to the same plane; a thick layer just gives the units more room to move.

Two habits save trouble on clay. Build the base to a proper depth and compact it in lifts before any sand is screeded, and pull the finished surface away from the house so the ground beside the foundation is not where the water ends up. Where a job needs more body than a fine sand offers under a leveling course, step up to the coarser washed option or to angular screenings.

Picking a drop spot the wind will not take

Fine sand behaves differently from stone on delivery day. It travels in a breeze once it dries out, it stains a driveway, and it is miserable to shovel off grass. Have a tarp down, pick a spot out of the wind, and keep a sheet handy if the load will sit for more than a day or two.
